"The Curse of the Voynich" book launch...?

How should we launch our splendid book? In many ways, Compelling Press is approaching book publishing back-to-front:-

* We're starting small, guerilla-style (aiming to grow demand as we go)
* We're printing on demand (so that we can make rapid changes to the content)
* We're collecting real endorsements (not the fake ones many books sport)
* We're launching a paperback original (what use are hardbacks for most people?)

Following the logic through, what use is a launch party? Perhaps should we concentrate on making publishing the book worthwhile by making sure people buy it and read it, and then have a success party where everyone is invited?

What do you think?

Haven't read it yet, Nick - but looking forward to. Paperback is of course the best format - have you thought of selling it as an ebook as well? I know the pdf format makes it more exposed to unauthorized copies but it certainly reaches more people, takes no room and one can have a copy that might be easily annotated in no time.
Perhaps in an abridged version?
Good luck and meet you at the skycast. Happy New Year!

Hi Explora,

One of the problem with publishing non-fiction as PDFs is the issue of permissions. To sell a copy of the book as an e-book, I would need to obtain the same kind of clearance for all of the quotations and pictures I use as for the book. It's debatable whether I would then be able to sell such an e-book for less than the price of a paperback... which rather defeats the object of the exercise. :-(

Still, the paperback is only a measly £9.95 and available from stock direct from Compelling Press - but you knew that already!

Note that it's already abridged, insofar as I worked hard to keep the page count down to around 240 pages (it could easily have hit 500 pages): but I think the book finished up better for it. :-)

Happy New Year, and hope to meet you at the (rearranged) Skypecast!

Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
